Winnie’s Tiny Knitted Dog Sweater Pattern

Tiny Chihuahua wearing a knit sweater

Tiny dogs are notoriously hard to fit. Most commercial patterns bottom out at “XS” and still swamp a 4-pound dog. Connie at Hartwood Roses built this ribbed sweater specifically for Winnie – a tiny dog with an 11-inch chest and a 9-inch back length.

If you have a Chihuahua or another very small breed, this is one of the few patterns actually sized for them.

How it’s built

Worked with double-pointed needles, in ribbing, with a center front seam. It’s an intermediate project – not because the stitches are complicated, but because double-pointed needles take some getting used to if you haven’t used them before.

The ribbing gives it stretch, which helps with the fit on small dogs who can be hard to measure precisely.

What you need

  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Size: Tiny dogs – sample is 4 lbs, 11-inch chest circumference, 9 inches shoulder to tail
  • Yarn: Worsted weight

The pattern is a blog post from 2014, still live and free to access.
