Aran Dog Sweater Knitting Pattern

Dog wearing an Aran cable knit sweater

Aran sweaters look great on dogs. Louise Bollanos at Handy Little Me designed this one with Irish moss stitch and cables. It takes some skill, but the result is worth it – this is one of the better-looking dog sweater patterns out there.

Three sizes, adjustable for length and chest width. Bulky yarn, so it knits up faster than it looks.

How it’s built

The back piece is knit flat, back and forth on the needles. The neck is worked in the round. The pattern features Irish moss stitch, cable details, and ribbing – classic Aran elements, adapted for a dog.

It’s an intermediate pattern. If you’ve done a cable before and you’re comfortable with moss stitch, you’ll be fine. If cables are new to you, this might be a stretch.

What you need

  • Skill level: Intermediate
  • Sizes: Small, Medium, Large – adjustable for body length and chest width
  • Yarn: Bulky/Chunky/12 Ply (e.g., Lion Brand Hue and Me Yarn)
