The detail of the practical knitting instructions which pepper this pattern really impressed us. It's a very good example for someone looking to knit their very first attempt at a medium-sized dog sweater. The author, "Midnight Knitter", is obviously trying to help his or her fellow needle knasher.

"If you have another ball of Big Wool, add sleeves to the armholes."

It may seem silly, but comments like the aforementioned are very useful when considering a pattern for the first time, as there are many different styles and preferences among knitters who share their dog sweater patterns online. For the perfect dog sweater fit, it is said that owners must measure their pooch from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Measured in inches, the result will be the best choice of size for your specific friend. If you'd like to take it a step further, there are several resources online that will assist you in accurately measuring your beloved canine for his or her very own knitted or crocheted dog sweater. We don't currently host a guide of our own and based on some of your emails I thought it would be helpful to point you in the direction of some of our favorites.

1. TheKnittinNeedle.com features a terrific page, accompanied by many helpful photos, which will lead you through the measurement process from soup to nuts. Their guide is designed to allow people to send them measurements so that the site can knit and send out sweaters at a price. If you use or have a look at their photos and diagrams, be sure to glance at their portfolio and think about purchasing from them.

2. Pet-Shop.net offers up a wonderful dog sweater size chart organized by breed which is well organized and easy to follow. The chart also defines sizes and their range from extra small to double extra large. There are over 50 breeds outlined so be sure to have a look and see if your pet's pedigree is among those listed.

3. For those of you who prefer practical examples Leila Simonsen has written a long description of how she likes to measure dogs when preparing to knit them a sweater. This guide encourages you to draw life size diagrams with leg and neck holes included to ensure your choice of pattern is the best suited before beginning the knitting or crocheting process.

Custom Monogrammed Dog Sweaters?

If you're as excited as me that there is going to be a fourth Indiana Jones movie, the title of this post will likely make perfect sense to you. Indy always tried to keep the genesis of his nickname under wraps, usually extremely unsuccessfully. But most pooches and their owners want the world to know their names, and a personalized dog sweater would seem a terrific way to make that happen.

It's easy enough to buy a custom sweater with your dog's name emblazoned upon it, but does anyone have any ideas as to the best way to knit one themselves? I wasn't able to find a pattern of the sort – if anyone would like to design one we'd be happy to feature it here on DGK. It's easier said than done, obviously, but a template suited for dogs with names of reasonably short length should be fairly straightforward. There will be no question who knit the sweater when your neighbors see your very own dog's name on it! What does everyone think?

Halloween Costumes for Dogs?

All Hallow's Eve is just 12 short weeks away. Have you consulted Rover as to what he wants to dress up as this year? Chuckle if you like, but Halloween costumes for dogs have become big scary business in the last several years. Many major online pet retailers are stocking them, and the quality and wide variety of options will likely put a chill down your spine. We ran a quick search and found the following dog costume options available for 2007:

Football Player: Strap on some pads and show the Rottweiler down the street who's boss!

Wonder Dog: It's a bird! It's a plane! It's… doodie all over the roof of my new car!

Cowboy: I remember the commercial where the dogs chased the chuckwagon, but this is ridiculous.

Prisoner: And Snowball used to think crate training was bad!

Skunk: A hilarious idea, just don't let the farmer down the road take a shotgun to your beloved.

So if you think it would be fun for you and the kids to walk your pooch around the neighborhood in a creepy getup come October 31st, there are a lot more dog Halloween costumes to choose from. The five we've mentioned are just the tip of the tombstone.

Esther Bozak’s Custom-Knit Dog Sweater.

I emailed Esther a few years ago and asked if I could use her popular pattern on this site. She politely declined my request, but it's still a great resource and I want to point it out to everyone. The story goes, she was frustrated at the lack of a suitable pattern for her pooch so she came up with her own. Along the way, she decided to make it customizable for anyone to use based on dog neck and chest measurements. Esther suggests you make 2 sweaters, so one will have ample time to dry after Fido frolics in the snow. Have a look for yourself, and let us know what you think!

Wylie was a well-loved pooch whose owner built a tribute page for him which features a great and simple knitting pattern for everyone to enjoy. If you've been looking for a good Chihuahua sweater pattern, keep reading: "This sweater was inspired by, and designed for him. At one point he had 12 of them in all kinds of stitches, colors, styles and fibers. He wore them with pride and a cocky attitude." The memory of Wylie also lives on in this terrific gallery of sweaters which people have knit based on this pattern and then submitted. Prerequisites of Selecting a Dog Sweater Pattern.

Don't select a sweater based on size alone – there are many other factors you should take into consideration when selecting a pattern. There's a great list from eHow.com on the subject. Here are a few of our favorite tips:

1. Understand that sweaters are not just a silly accessory. Many dogs need to wear them in cold weather. Shorthaired breeds, older dogs, ill dogs and puppies may need to wear sweaters for protection in cold weather.

Ask your vet if you are unsure whether your dog needs a sweater.

Know that to be effective against cold a sweater should completely cover your dog's stomach, keep its legs free for easy movement, fit snugly and end at the base of the tail.

Notice that sweaters come in small, medium, large and extra-large sizes. If you are unsure which size your dog should wear, here's a guideline: Toy breeds wear small, beagle-size dogs wear medium, retriever-size dogs wear large and dogs the size of Saint Bernards wear extra-large. If all else fails, hold the sweater up to your dog to check for size.

The Smallest Dog Sweater Pattern Ever?

If you sometimes see your dog out of the corner of your eye and mistake it for a cockroach or hamster, you may want to have a look at this pattern. It's described as a 'Cabled Jacket' and looks as though it is suitable for beginners. If you've seen similar sweaters tailored to super-small dogs, please point us in the right direction. Eventually, we'd like to have a huge index of patterns divided by size and even breed! If anyone gives it a shot, please send us a photo of your favorite pooch decked out in this design. And maybe someday we'll even have permission to post it right here on DGK.

Greta and her Fancy Pink Wrap.

DogGoneKnit's old friend, Bonnie, was nice enough to send in this photo of Greta wearing her lovely new pink wrap!
